Counting down and counting sheep

As most of you know I have never been the best sleeper. I constantly battle insomnia and when stress levels are up I can’t seem to get my mind to shut off so I can fall into a blissful slumber.

So, here I am 2 days before I leave and despite prescribed sleep aides I am wide awake. Thousands of to-dos are running in and out of my mind. Guilt is also setting in about leaving John and the kids more then I had counted on.

I am becoming more cranky from a combo of no sleep and my withdrawal pattern because I am not good at good byes, even short ones like this. My mind heads immediately to all worst case scenarios about everything. Which sucks because I want to enjoy this trip. I NEED to enjoy this trip.

So, in order to try to become more positive then negative I’m going to go and try meditation. First with my thanking for my blessings then sending out good juju to the world. Then maybe my brain will be ready for bed.

Hugs,

Shannon

Authentic self, or at least the authentic hair of ones self.

So, today as I was running around getting errands accomplished and trying to create a mental to-do-list in my head of everything I needed to accomplish before leaving in a week and some change.

Show hubs how to pay bills online, give copies of documents to family members, write down addresses for actual written correspondences, get hair trimmed and colored…at that moment I got this clear vision. I decided to take a huge bold step for me.

I going to not color or cut my hair, not for this trip maybe not even this summer. I mean I am taking the summer off from the “college” scene so I can let my hair down so to speak.

But, for me it is allowing the natural process of going grey have its way. No super duty hide the grey coloring with highlights in case they happen to not give in to their chemical torturing. Nope, for the first time in at least 20 years I am just gonna let au natural be the rule.

I may change back to snazzy new do and dark locks before classes start, but for this summer of getting into my core, into my real me I think this small step and change in mind-set that grey is ok, might just go a long way.

And in the end…

So here we are, another semester ending. Many of my friends and classmates are graduating and heading off to the great unknown. I should be one of them, alas I am not.

I have been pursuing this dangling carrot called a degree since fall 2002. I had finished my Associate of Science, Medical Assisting with high honors that June. I expected that I’d be working in that field for a while then work my way up into administration through time and taking classes here and there. I enrolled in an online program that took all my credits and guaranteed me a bachelors degree in 18 months.

I started off strong with decent grades then I had to take math, which I suck at, online. It was the first F I had ever gotten. I felt like the Titanic after hitting the iceberg--I was sinking.

I took a few more classes but felt lost and confused as to what I really wanted. Then life happened. I had to work while my husband was in the Marines so I took what ever employment I could to help make ends meet. I did work at the first duty station in the ER as a tech, but learned really quickly that I was not cut out for the face paced environment at 30 something despite being able to do so at 20 when I was in the Navy.

I also got hurt. It would forever change my ability to be a medical assistant. I injured my neck, upper and lower back and knee while helping to restrain a patient that the police brought in on drugs. I imagine he was strong sober, on drugs he was superman. I was tossed around like a rag doll. It ended my brief clinical career as a CMA (Certified Medical Assistant)

For the remainder of the tour of duty in NOLA I was assigned to an administrative position on a long term care floor. I was content there. I liked the work, I liked the hours, so I decided to pursue my bachelors in Hospital Administration and transferred to another online program that accepted all the credits and was very military friendly. In other words, if I was changing duty stations I could take leave without penalties, something the previous online college had a problem with.

Meanwhile, we transferred to North Carolina and I was forced yet again to take a job to support the family. Only this time I was a legal secretary. I figured a secretary is a secretary so I could make this work. I kinda liked the job despite clashing with the owner. I changed my major to a business administrative track.

Then life happened again. Husband was sent away on training, my son was sick a lot due to being in daycare and Katrina happened. All were steeping stones on the way to me being let go.

Despite the wrong doing in the termination it was a blessing in disguise because I found my voice in my writing and was able to find paying work in it. I was working steady with feature stories in various places and figured that I could keep that up when we returned to Ohio after the end of my husbands enlistment.

It wasn’t the case. I found it was more “good ol’ boys” club then anything I experienced in the South. I needed a degree to even get grunt work jobs. I was forced back to work to support the family by returning to my CMA roots.

I liked the job and it was a nice balance of clinical and administrative. I kept taking the classes and figured one day I’d move up the hospital food chain. I change my major back to Hospital Administration. However, as life always seems too, it happened again. I didn’t make it through my orientation or trial period due to illness.

I went job hunting for something around less sick people in hopes that I wouldn’t catch every cold or flu in the county. I ended up temping at a wonderful place as a administrative assistant. It suited me well.

I learned about the non-profit sector, something I had never had on my radar until then. I worked with great teachers and people who believed in me. Sadly, it was only a temp job. I was quickly hired into another non-profit though as I changed my major yet again to business administration.

I had a knack for innovation and office efficiency. I could see the big picture and all the little pictures in between. Unfortunately my life force was sucked out of me over a year and a half by a boss that thanks to karma got her just rewards in the end.

So, I decided to move to a traditional university. I changed majors to Communications because I knew I wanted to work in a creative or writing field. I had a natural talent for it but I needed the tools to get anywhere with it.

When I came to UA, I brought in over 145 credits, not including military and the fact that my AS was not excepted for any of my transfer credits. I had to retake my sciences, maths, humanities & speech, for what is now the 3rd time. I sucked it up and thought I’ll get there, I’ll cross that stage before I know it.

I’ve managed to maintain dean’s list for every semester I’ve been enrolled. But life happened…

Loans ran out, husband laid off, they changed my major around before I could sign my contract for graduation.

I fell in love with Chinese culture and decided that if I had to take a language now I might as well take one I can use and love. Which lead me to taking on the Asian Studies Certificate and adding extra courses.

Now I am here, the last weeks before finals. Wondering what to do next. I did decide that I am taking the summer off for a mental and financial break. I have my trip to China in 2 weeks and I can’t wait.

What I will do next August is still up in the air. I am scheduled for classes, but who knows what life may bring this summer. I am still at least 1 year away from any degree if I can go full time. I have 2 children that are fast approaching college themselves.

I hope that in my time off, I’ll get the fire to learn going again and maybe win the lottery to pay for it. I also need the time to take care of my family which I have sadly neglected during my full time schooling. And don’t get me started on the state of our house and the basement in grave need of organizing.

Plus, I want to read for fun again and write because I have an idea not a paper due.

I guess we all can dream, right…

Change of Scenery

Sometimes all we need is a simple change of scenery to change our outlook on things.

I’ve heard Jimmy Buffet preach that through many of his songs, and did notice what scenery made my day brighter.

I know living near water is my favorite, I am a water sign, so it makes sense. I also know that sunshine has a huge impact on my life. Warm vs. cold, rainy vs. gloomy, the list could go on.

This was a LONG, cold, gloomy and snow filled winter. It took a toll on my brain and zapped much of my energy. I know this because the minute we are sunny and barely warm, I come alive again. My brain sings.

Since I have to wait until May 13th to get a true change of scenery, I have created myself (with the carpentry skills of my wonderful husband) a mini change in scenery, my new study nook.

It sits in front of my bedroom window where I can watch the birds sing and bounce around the feeders. I can also see the sunshine or even the rain should I choose to. It isn’t a distracting space, but a functional and productive one.

Before, I was doing homework on my bed or on the living room couch, It was making me more unmotivated and even more tired then I already was. I needed a quiet place where I could practice my Chinese and put my thoughts to paper. It is all that and more.
(before empty space under window)

Inspired by my Chinese themed bedroom, I continued the clean lines, incorporated my favorite vases as organizational tools and even moved my bamboo plant to the desk top.

In the incredible design (a husband original) I have storage underneath for extra supplies, books I use for research and a book of clips that I may use in the future for story ideas.

Total cost for my transformation $25. He converted an old laundry folding table he built many moons ago into two parts. The upper desk and the lower shelf. Its only big expense (aside from the 3 hours he put into it) was the 2x4s used for the base and legs.

                                                                                   (close up after)

I found an Asian style tablecloth to cover the rough wood for a mere $5 at Wal-Mart. All the desk accessories are repurposed from other parts of the house.

By forcing me to sit upright to work, my posture and attitude improves. Watching the birds brings me peace, having my treasure surrounding me gives me security. So, essentially it is priceless.

I’d like to leave you with a question, what have you done during these tough economic times to help change your scenery? Did you create a special space for yourself? Did you repurpose items you had giving them new life?

Feel free to comment or send me a tweet with your scenery change. If you have a scenery challenge, send me what it is and maybe I and my fellow readers can help you find ’your’ space.

Until next time,

Zaijian!

A beautiful day

Sometimes we forget just how beautiful our lives are. We rush from place to place, project to project, task to task without noticing the wonderful things around us. We complain about lack of time, lack of freedom, lack of what the “Jones” have; never once stopping to think what a beautiful day it is.

I admit I do this, but as I am growing older and wiser I am stopping more often. I ignore the strange looks I get when I stop along the sidewalk to enjoy the beauty of the flowers, warmth of the sun and occasionally the raindrops on my face.

Last weekend in all the hustle and bustle of Easter festivities, I had to run to Walmart to grab a few things. I parked by the garden section and walked in. Immediately I was struck by the most beautiful scent. I stopped, looked around and found the culprit to be the Easter lilies & hyacinths on display. The sale clerk looked at me strangely but when I bent over the fragrant flowers I looked up again and smiled, and so did she.

Spring is often a season that comes and goes so swiftly here in Ohio. We are happy to usher out the snowy winter weather but often want to jump right into backyard bbq’s and pool parties. Spring is the in-between of boredom and fun times. Spring is often my favorite time of year.

It is often the perfect temperature for me: cool nights, warm days, jeans & t-shrit weather. It is also a season of renewal: flowers blooming, gardens being planted, baby animals everywhere. But most of all it is a time that we can and should sit down for a moment and just be.

So, I want you to do me a huge favor- stop what you are doing, walk outside or open a window. Let the warm sun hit your face while the fragrant blooms penetrate your senses and just be still. I promise, it is totally worth it.

Wow twice in one day...

So I was thinking…

…with the fact that life is getting crazy between school, the fact that I will have a senior and a junior next fall and that I have a sports playing fool of a son, (and that’s just the surface) that I’m going to simplify things.

This mainly has to do with my various websites, and my activity on them. So as of May 1st http://anicasfamily.com & http://shannonanicas.com will be going down. I will have the domain for shannonanicas.com still incase I have enough money at some point for hosting, but at this time with things as they are I can’t afford the hosting. It also means that the site http://shannonanicas.com/wordpress where I attempted to revamp my site and blog there, is going away too. So now my blogging will be done on Http://shannon-anicas.blogspot.com and subsequently linked to my face book, myspace and twitter pages when something posts. Its free and you cant beat free.

Ok…now back to homework (until another ADD thought that I feel I have to share pops in my brain and out on my keys)

April Foolishness

First, I want to wish my awesome sister-in-law a Happy Birthday. She will be greatly tormented tonight which is part of being born on April Fools day in my husbands family.

Second, I mentioned in a quick tweet/status update that I was trying something new. And well, I did.

I tried out an herbal body wrap. With fingers crossed and mummified feeling I wanted to try something to help reduce the water retention I have been battling with since 2004. Doctors have tried and tested everything (when I had insurance) and nothing was working.

Some times I am less poofy then others and sometimes I am uber poofy. Lately its been uber poofy. With my trip in 47 days I need to get it under control or I will look like Violet from Willy Wonka minus the blue.

So, I tried this with hopes of something magical and in a way it was.

I lay wrapped in ace-like bandages and in a plastic suit on a warm cozy bed under soft blankets. Lights were dimmed and the music was soothing. I drifted away for the 45 minutes of soaking.

The bandages came off and I got measured - 4 inches gone! What?! I was stunned. I knew I wouldn’t be a rail again but I was able to see results. I have 3 more before I leave. My wrap artist suggested due to the obviousness of the water retention that I try a sauna too. I mentioned I don’t sweat, I swell, and she said I might break through this with the combo of both of the herbal treatment, lots of water, lots of sweating and better diet.

I am willing to try it, after all it can’t hurt.

It's been a while...

Its been a while. I have been up to my eyeballs in school, life, and trying to get to China.

I went from full-time student in Fall 08-Spring 09 and in summer 09 as well. In fall due to money constraints and the fact I was starting a grand adventure in Chinese I was only a part time student. This spring semester (sp2010) I decided to go full time again. Taking Feature Writing, Chinese 102, Chinese culture through film and American Film history 45-present. It turned out to be a lot harder then I expected.

I also discovered cabin fever can have a powerful effect on motivation, as does sunlight. Needless to say, I haven’t been as diligent a student as in my past semesters.

Some say I’m burnt out on school and I have to agree. I have gone full throttle for nearly 2 years taking hard course and pushing myself to maintain Deans List. It has been extremely rewarding but extremely exhausting. So to that I’m not taking summer classes this year. I know it will prolong my degree but it will save my sanity.

Now for China. Many of you know it has been my passion and dream to make a trip to China this summer. Our University has many different ways of doing via study abroad, language studies, and various culture trips. I was scheduled to attend a 5 week trip to study language. But do to powers that be above my professors head our trip was cancelled. I, and others who have been planning this trip for 2 semesters were devastated to say the least. Lucky I was able to be a last minute add to a culture trip.

On May 13 I begin a 3 week journey to China and South Korea. We will visit Shanghai, Xi’an, Kaifeng, Beijing, Seoul and DMZ. I plan on taking lots of pictures and video and hopefully writing about my journey. I am beyond excited and even did a dance of joy when my passport arrived.

When I get back I’m just going to chill. Well not completely. I am going to be actively writing again. I hope to be a querying monster when all is said and done.

I also plan on reading A LOT! I have literally stack of books to read. I want to get lost in them without worrying that I’m neglecting a paper or a study session. All for pleasure….ahhh I can’t wait!

Also, I’m going relax and spend more time with the family, especially my kiddos who are growing up and in a few short years will be adults.

Well, I have to run I’m going to be late for class. At least the sun is out today!

Until next time!

Yeah finals are finished for me! Now I can take on the undertaking of merriment and the insanity that it entails.

Yeah finals are finished for me! Now I can take on the undertaking of merriment and the insanity that it entails.

First order of business, my house is a f'ing mess. Now those that know me know I have housework with a passion and also that I have a clutter issue. Without condemnation for my short comings I need to do a quick prep for holiday decorating, cooking and possible unexpected guests because right now you can not walk through from my front door and make a b-line for the bathroom without numerous obsticales. So Tomorrow I shall tackle the main thru-fare.

Second, I need to get Christmas cards out. I usually am good about getting them out by Thanksgiving weekend but with learning Mandarin this semester had I written them they would have been in pinyin and that is not good for non-chinese speaking people. Part of this card sending process is updating addresses. What I am trying to do is figure out a way to get the family I'm now connected via facebook, myspace & twitter to give up addresses without being all "whats your address" in a post. If ya' have an idea on how to approach this please share.

C, I want to relax a little bit, soak in the glow of our well lit house and maybe read something that isn't related to school. Last winter break I read the Twilight series (or is it saga now) in 4 days. I was hooked. It was the perfect antidote to my first semester at the University of Akron. It was candy for my brain and I ate it up. Not sure what I'm going for this time but I have my eye on a few Amy Tan Novels. (Yes, I know they are Chinese themed and thus not straying from school but damnit I like Chinese themes!)

So in closing I wanted to say I will be (hopefully) catching up on some blogging and writing too. I have had a few amazing adventures over the last 16 weeks both in and out of school. So look for those in the coming days and weeks.

Well, I hope this isn't too bad from my first wave (hi everyone!) now to figure out how to get it to my blog.....

A day in the life...August 6, 2009

I'm up & awake way earlier then the last few weeks. I made my self go to bed early last night by not taking a nap yesterday.

Gotta get back in "school" mode. 2 weeks left & it will take me 2 weeks to get back to schedule. I can't wait though.

Gearing up for football season here. New Zips stadium is looking more and more complete and Johnathan has started conditioning for pewee

Feels like fall outside today. It got down to 50 last night. I know right its August but it is Ohio so you know how that goes.

Today's agenda is bowling then reading and watching movies I got from the library. And maybe trying to figure out some ways to make quick cash off stuff in the house.

I took a giant load of clothes of mine and Amanda's to a local store that does the cash for clothes. Wasn't as big of a success as I figured. Thinking eBay will be the best way.

I want to start going through my things. I mean really go through them and get rid of everything I can. Really tired of living in clutter. I will never fit in the clothes I hung on to. Most of which are outta style anyway.

Plus much of it is work clothes for which any job I could get right now would not require because they all come with cute uniforms that match the ascetics of the store.

Ok I need coffee so I'm off to see if the DH ever cleaned his coffee pot. I refuse to drink coffee from the pot, for which I deamed his pot, because he never cleans it & has no problem drinking several day old coffee out of. I begged him to either give me a daily coffee allowance of $2.19 for my coffee or clean the damn pot out with bleach and a bio hazard suit.

Oh sure I'm the wife I should clean it....WRONG....some don't to windows...I don't do coffee pots!

As such is life!

Preworkout snack

1 c lowfat cottage cheese-
1 tbsp flaxseed mix
10 blueberrys.
I love it so yummy & good for you!

Dawning of a new day….and body…

As I have noted I have put out there that I am working on a new me and I am taking it very seriously. I actually had started a few weeks ago and started making forward progress so I would be able to talk myself into the whole publicly working out & eating right thing.

In fact in a few weeks I started really working with weights and walking a lot. I also have begun the hard task of getting off my ass during my vacation from school and becoming living a more active life.

I have also increased my water intake and decreased all other beverages. I still enjoy my unsweetened iced tea. I also enjoy sugar free popsicles…

Saturday, July 25, 2009

Well I'm going to do it.

Well I'm going to do it.

I'm putting it out there for the world to see.

I'm setting a goal not a weight goal because that is just a number. I'm setting a lifestyle change goal.

I want to feel good & look good. I want to not only look half my age but feel half my age.

And my reward (besides the obvious awesomeness) is a tattoo from the famed Gas Chamber Inc in NC.

So it’s a road trip plus being tatted by Shannon Moore’s crew. (I may also get a piercing or two as well) I've always wanted to get tattoo but have always been too chicken to get one. Now I’ll use it a permanent marker of what I've accomplished.

I will post before-during-after pictures, as well as the trials and tribulations along the way for all to see. Something that freaks me out but I know will ultimately give me strength in the end.

Overcoming mental fears are as powerful as getting a better lifestyle.

So why all the dramatics? Because I am very good at starting and very bad at follow through. Especially when it is something hard for me. I will self sabotage myself every step of the way and not reach my goal no matter how bad I really want it.

Whether it is finishing a project that has great potential to push my career to the next level or to get really healthy again I find some way to f&#k it up.

But this time I really want this really bad. I need this really bad. Not just for physical health reasons, but mental health as well. I need to prove to myself I have what it takes again.

So as I push myself I beg of you please push me too. If I fall off the wagon, chastise me but tell me to push through and get back on. I need this. I will forever be indebted to those willing to help me in this endeavor.

“It’s getting hard to be someone, but it all works out…”

“It’s getting hard to be someone, but it all works out…”
Strawberry Fields~ The Beatles

I am writing this after another night of being fully awake until 4 am and up at 8:30, then dozing from 9-12. I have been battling sleepless nights again since not needing to get up in the morning.

But this is not the first battle with this nor do I think it will be the last.

I have spent my entire life trying to conform to be awake in daylight and asleep at night. For as long as I can remember I could stay up all night without difficulty provided I could sleep in. But thanks to needing to conform to an 8-5 society I have had to force my body into this life cycle.

When I was at my writing heights (successfully publishing 23 articles in a span of 6 months) I was completely nocturnal. I am at my creative heights from about 11 pm to 4 am. When the world is silent my brain is in overdrive.

Which is great when you can utilize it to make beautiful art out of words, but not so great when you need to get up in the morning so you are forced to quiet the creative juices with large doses of medications just to be “normal”? And let me tell ya…normal sucks.

Friday, June 12, 2009

what happens when....

...you are on a medication that you are unaware that it makes you sensitive to the sun
...you normally dont burn so you aren't wearing sunscreen
...you ride on the back of a harley for 120 miles under mostly cloudy skies with a low cut tank top to look like all the other biker chicks

...you end up sunburned so bad that it gets into layers of skin causing blistering. When it peels it doesn't just take the top layer of skin with it...it goes several layers deep...and bleeds....and hurts...I have what you use on burns that is a gel that becomes a protective second skin on it. it feels like any sudden movements and the entire area will rip off again.

Lessons learned:

ALWAYS wear sunscreen
Know your medications if they make you sun sensitive let your doctor know.
Wear a t-shirt if you are going to be in the sun for extended periods so sensitive areas aren't burned.

Two-weeks to revamp my 'tude

Is it Mississippi I miss or is it the people or is it the ability to be yourself and no need to put on appearances?

I am not sure why I feel I need to be someone or something living up here but no matter how hard I try to be myself the more I hide under the layers of what others expect of me.

I was looking through a friends pictures and everyone was so happy and relaxed. Comfortably dressed and it reminded me of how good I felt when I went back home last summer. After I pulled the stick outta my ass and just was in the moment. I relaxed and enjoyed every last bead of sweat falling down my Wal-Mart tank top as I sat in the sun with my fat ass in jean shorts and flip flops. I wasn’t trying to be anything but present. And you know what it was amazing.

Then I came back hope to Ohio, got fired, freaked out and decided to return to college where I attempt to be something I am not—18 again. Sure I feel 18 inside but dressing in their catchy clothes and latest fads is exhausting. I go home feeling frumpy and fat. I go back the next day and feel like they are laughing at me. It is like I am 18 all over again but in the-back in high school-need to fit in-I am not good enough way.

So what do I do? For that I am taking the two weeks off between classes to start to figure that out. How do I find balance with myself and with whom I feel I need to be? Only time will tell.

PS: My grades are totally awesome and I am excelling at the academics of it all. Just having a mid-thirties crisis.

Book recommendation from Mia Tyler....

March 7th The Book Of Awakenings

I posted to her blog after watching the vlog saying this couldn't be more appropriate for myself and a dear friend that is also in a time in his life that we could use some guideance. I am going to go by this book and I will let everyone know what I think of it. I am also going to by a copy for my friend and see if he would like to share his thoughts of it as well.

Until, next time....love, Shannon

Sad, sad world....Fox News report Unemployment by the Numbers: How Bad Is It Hurting?

Unemployment by the Numbers: How Bad Is It Hurting?
Friday , March 06, 2009
More people are unemployed in America than live in Ohio or go to church in Texas.
Unemployment statistics don't usually leap off the page, but the latest report from the Department of Labor offers some astounding figures. More than 651,000 jobs were cut in February, continuing a steep drop that has raised the unemployment rate to 8.1 percent, its highest level since 1983.
Matched up against some of the latest stats made available by the Census Bureau, those numbers really do begin to add up.
• 651,000 jobs were axed in February, a number larger than the populations of:- Baltimore- Seattle- Denver- El Paso- Washington, D.C.
• 12.5 million people are unemployed in the U.S., which is more than the number of:- people watching ABC's "Lost" this season- women attending college- male scientists and engineers- Americans who grow herbs- people who played tackle football in the past year.
• 12.5 million people is also a number larger than the populations of 45 states, including- Ohio- Pennsylvania- Michigan- Virginia
• 4.4 million jobs have been lost since the recession began in December 2007, which is larger than the population of the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
• 2.6 million jobs have been lost in the past four months, which is like every Presbyterian in America getting the ax in one winter, or about the number of senior citizens in Florida.
• 8.6 million people have been forced to work part-time for economic reasons, which is more than the population of New York City, or more than the number of people who try to quit smoking every year.
The roll continues, and it is a stark one: construction companies eliminated 104,000 jobs in February, factories cut 168,000 jobs, retailers sliced nearly 40,000, professional and business services got rid of 180,000, financial companies reduced payrolls by 44,000, and leisure and hospitality firms chopped 33,000 positions.
Despite all the doom and gloom in the Labor Department's numbers, at least one sector had a pretty rosy February: the government boosted its number of employees last month.

The start of something good

I can feel it, Spring it in the air—even if it’s not on the thermometer.

With the season of spring comes a renewal. It can be a spiritual renewal, a cleanliness renewal or even a garden renewal. We see the evidence of life starting over in the dirt around us. New plants are pushing through the soil, pushing through hardships just so they can bask in the warmth of the sun with its tender leaves.

Sometimes when we go through long, dark and cold months that are winter we tend to forget the beauty that is around us. Sure snow falling is beautiful, but many months of it can be frustrating. It is this very time a year that leads us to hope. Hope that spring will come; that flowers will bloom again, that the grass will be green again, and that we will no longer have 20 pounds of extra clothing to lug around.

I look forward to this spring because I will finally get to see the results of my garden I planted last year. You see this is our first house with a yard, so over the last year or so I kinda went hog-wild with planting flowers. I planted every kind of bulb I could get my hands on; tulips, daffodils, irises, and lots of lilies. This weekend we are supposed to (I use this term lightly) have warmer weather which means I can finally go inspect my tiny little sprouts.

Another piece of springtime is the concept of “spring cleaning”. This is another term that I am using lightly. Everyone knows I am not the biggest fan of house work of any kind (it just isn’t in my nature.) But I do take the spring time to try and shape up the house.

This year I started in the master bedroom. I had been decorated it in an old country style, which is the main decorating theme of the house, but wanted something new. Since money is tight after both of us losing our jobs and returning to school, I had a very tiny budget to redo the whole room.

Not a problem! I happen to have an older bed set that has an oriental theme to it. So with my new interest in all things Chinese, I decided to run with the oriental theme.

I lucked upon some frame art at the local Family Dollar that showed various Chinese characters. I got all 6 (love, happiness, peace, strength, harmony, and wisdom) for $15 plus tax. Then I went to Kmart and got two small plants that look very similar to bamboo for $5 for both. I went to the Dollar Tree and for another $5 I bought 2 black bamboo placemats, 2 red bamboo placemats and 2/1 black woven baskets. I also found 2 crystals and 2 good luck bells on eBay for $7.

I took my new treasures (and my old ones) and started redoing my room.

First, I pulled everything out from under my bed. I had read somewhere that having clutter under your bed can cause you unrest. Well I am a medicated insomniac so I need all the rest I can get! So out went the old magazines, shoes and tons of dust bunnies.

Next, I stripped the bed of the old stuff and put on my new/old set, right down to the dust ruffle. (And why is it a dust ruffle? Is it to hide the dust, because it sure doesn’t keep it out!)

My next task was sorta easy. I grabbed an empty box from the basement and cleared off all surfaces. Boy a lot of stuff gets dumped in common areas! Once the surfaces were clean, I wiped them down and placed the bamboo placemats down and put back only the minimum items. I am sure in 6 months it will get cluttered again, but for now it is flawless.

I cleared off the top of the TV and put another mat there. I placed each of the plants inside of the small baskets and place them on top. I wanted to bring something into the room that showed renewal and life, so plants it is.

John hung my mirrors and pictures up on the walls in a nice balanced pattern. I cleared off all the knickknack shelves and only put the most precious things back up after cleaning an inch of dust off of them.

John also helped me by bringing up an old, black plastic bookshelf from the basement. I love repurposing things because it is like shopping but in your own closets (or in my case the basement). I used the bookshelf to get some books and magazines up off the floor and into some sort of organization. I found my tiny Buddha statue made of fake Jade and put him on the top shelf along with some yummy smelling candles and an incense holder with a Yin/Yang design on it. When the crystals and Chinese knots arrived I placed them up in the windows next to the black room darkening curtains.

Without knowing it I basically Feng Shui’d my room. I brought in life, light, and sounds. I cleared out my qi and gave the floor a good cleaning so everything could flow beautifully. The colors of the room (black and a ruby red ) brings me peace. The only thing I am missing is water which I can’t have because John says the sound makes him want to pee. (It would me too) I now have my little sanctuary.

Since I did this spring cleaning last weekend I have slept incredibly well. I also have found myself waking up earlier and with more enthusiasm. I have even been more productive with creative thought when in the room. So all and all I think it is a good thing.

So I guess the moral of the story is that just because the world as we know it is struggling to make ends meet doesn’t mean we can’t make ourselves happy. Just by clearing things out and changing my bed set to one I hadn’t used in a while, became the catalyst to a fresh start.

That is what spring is to me, time for a fresh start. I hope you continue to join me as I take this fresh start with my blog, I know it will be a great one!

With much love and respect,
Shannon

Ode to 2008

Reflections:

Found new family and reconnected with other family. I had an amazing visit with my family in MS & LA and have had the pleasure of getting to know cousins and other relatives that I didn’t even know I had. All are very important to me and I am honored to have all of them in my life now.

Lost my job but gained my health and the ability to go to school. It was unfair in how I was let go and how I was treated before hand, but I have moved on.

I gained some awesome and amazing friends while at UA. I was very nervous about going to a big campus and being around people younger then me that I wouldn’t make friends, but to my surprise I mad a lot of really awesome friends. I loved getting to know everyone and hope to have them in my life for a very long time.

At UA I learned about respect and the value of communication. I am studying Communication so naturally I should learn about communicating, but I have learned more in my not text book portions of school about things like tolerance, acceptance, respect of all opinions, patience, and love of what makes us unique. I learned listening is a lot more fun then talking.

I learned that just because someone sucks the life out of you (my last job) that it is possible to get it back if you work at it and don't give up. I didn't give up and got deans list.

I learned that I am capable of reading over 2000 pgs over 3 wks if it is good reading. I got bit by the twilight bug and read the 4 books. Now I dream of sparkly vampires and hot blooded werewolves protecting me in the night.

I also learned that I want to travel with my next job. I have too much gypsy in my soul to sit still so to satisfy the urge to roam I will incorporate it in to my job search.

I also learned you are as young as you feel, so since I still feel 20 something that is where I’ll stay. I also accept me for me I am what I am and that is all I can be, flaws and all.

For 2009 my goals are:
I will continue the great path of learning I am on,
I will work on all of my relationships to keep them strong,
I will love life each day as it is my last,
I will find the open window even when the door has closed,
I will be patient for not everyone runs at my speed,
I will dance in the rain, play in the snow, and soak up the sun every chance I get.
